Prehistoric Origins The first evidence of human settlements in the area dates back to the Bronze Age. The hamlet of Polada gave its name to a prehistoric culture characterized by square-mouthed terracotta vases, dating back to the early Bronze Age. Roman Period During the Roman era, Desenzano, known as "Decentianum", became an important agricultural and commercial center. The presence of a Roman villa from the 4th century AD, with splendid floor mosaics, testifies to the importance of the city in this period. The remains of the villa can be visited today and represent one of the main archaeological attractions of the area. Lake Garda Middle Ages With the fall of the Roman Empire, Desenzano went through a period of instability. In the Middle Ages, it was contested between Brescia and Verona, undergoing various dominations.
